New character sprite
YOLLICOSMIC » Devlog
After a good deal of thought, I’ve replaced Yollicosmic’s character sprite, switching from the little spacefarer design to a new mindblowing ultra-high-fidelity rendition of the protagonist from Snootlet.
There are a few reasons for this:
- Despite being less humanoid, the little character from Snootlet has a stronger sense of personality than the astronaut character.
- The character’s unassuming, helpless-looking design contributes to the sense of oddness and unease that I liked about the published version of Snootlet, and it should do the same in this project.
- Using a familiar sprite improves the sense of continuity between the two. I’m not trying to make this game a prequel or sequel to the first (which lacks a proper narrative at all), but I do like the clearer connection.
- The astronaut character was, ultimately, a little boring to me. Since Metroid-like games seem to dominate the genre, going with a non-obviously-space-themed character (even though the game still takes place in space) is a small way to set this game apart.
The new character feels expressive and personable despite using the same 8x8 footprint (with a little fudging: the sprite is technically 16x16, but the active area is mostly in the center at 8x8). I’m interested in what kind of cosmic torment is in store for them.
